Understanding wagering requirements and restricted bonus funds

A bonus balance is not necessarily money available to withdraw. Promotional terms can restrict when funds become withdrawable and what happens if the conditions are not met. Understanding those restrictions helps distinguish an advertised amount from accessible cash.

What a wagering requirement means

A wagering requirement specifies an amount of betting required before particular funds become withdrawable. The multiplier needs a clearly defined base: a number such as “10 times” is incomplete without stating what amount it applies to.

For an illustrative bonus-only requirement, £10 multiplied by 10 gives £100 of required wagers. This arithmetic describes turnover, not a promised return, a fixed cost, or a guarantee that the balance will last until the requirement is completed. It is an explanation of a restriction, not a recommendation to pursue it.

The Gambling Commission’s current rewards-and-bonuses rules limit bonus wagering requirements to 10 times for licensees covered by the provision. These changes took effect on 19 January 2026. This is a Great Britain regulatory example, not a universal limit. Sources: current rewards-and-bonuses rules and implementation announcement.

Why the headline is insufficient

Keep the advertised claim and its conditions together when checking an offer. Ask which funds are restricted, which conditions apply, and what consequences follow from breaching them. Do not infer missing details from another promotion or from an older review.

The Commission’s transparency guidance says significant conditions must be accessible, restricted funds must be identified, and consumers must be informed about applicable restrictions and their consequences. Merely burying information in general website terms is insufficient under that guidance. Source: transparency guidance.

Does a bonus remove the risk of losing money?

No. A conditional promotional balance should not be described as guaranteed income or a risk-free return. If a condition is unclear, record the wording and seek a written explanation rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
